It is a risk to be killed since you aren't able to use an anti-drag sheild (unless you use bronze bolts in conjunction with a regular crossbow), which i really wouldn't advise. Maging it will be awful as i read tht it has impressive magical of. When you reach the lvls of melee you'll need a rune-scimimy (40atk required) and Adamant Armour (30 def needed) or an amulet containing str and the str potion might help.. U also need the anti drag sheild as without it, the elvarg could be able to hit up to 500 dmg.
